Exam overview and structure

Multilevel test designed to assess your ability to understand, use, and communicate effectively in English within an academic setting, including comprehending lectures, participating in discussions, reading and analysing academic texts, and writing research papers or essays.

Listening 40 min approx.

30 questions

Part 1: Listen to seven unfinished dialogues and choose the appropriate completion or continuation from the three-option multiple-choice responses.

Part 2: Listen to five conversations in academic-related contexts and answer two three-option multiple-choice questions for each one.

Part 3: Listen to a lecture or podcast on an academic subject and fill in seven gaps in a notepad with no more than three words each time.

Part 4: Listen to a group discussion or debate on an academic subject, such as a three-speaker discussion, and answer six three-option multiple-choice questions.

Each part is played twice.

Reading 50 min

Academic and real-life texts

Focus: Comprehension of written English including main ideas, details, inference, vocabulary and text organisation.

Prepare: Practise skimming, scanning and careful reading of longer academic texts.

Writing 50 min

Structured written tasks

Focus: Produce clear, structured written English appropriate for academic or formal situations.

Prepare: Practise planning, paragraph structure, linking, grammar and task fulfilment.

Speaking 14 min approx.

Spoken communication

Focus: Spoken interaction, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and clear communication.

Prepare: Practise extended answers, discussion, pronunciation and confidence under time pressure.

Before your test, we recommend arriving at the Test Centre just 30 minutes early, bringing along your valid photo ID for identification purposes. Our friendly & dedicated Test Centre personnel will be guiding you through the check-in process with utmost care & support.

UKVI Test Centre

Choose LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT at a UKVI Test Centre if you're applying for a course that is:

  • Below degree level (foundation, pathways or professional English course)
  • Somewhere that is not a Higher Education Institution

Australia
