Exam overview and structure

A CEFR-aligned general English qualification with single-level exams from A1 to C2. The Written exam covers Listening, Reading and Writing, while the Spoken exam covers Speaking. They can be taken together for four-skill certification or independently where appropriate.

Listening 30-45 min

Multi-part listening tasks

Focus: Understanding everyday conversations, announcements, interviews and discussions across CEFR levels.

Format: Multiple-choice and short response questions; recordings played twice where appropriate.

Reading 45-75 min

Mixed text types

Focus: Comprehension of notices, articles, emails and longer texts depending on the level taken.

Prepare: Build vocabulary, practise skim/scan reading and detailed comprehension.

Writing 45-75 min

Structured written tasks

Focus: Produce clear written English suitable to the CEFR level — from short messages at A1 to discursive writing at C2.

Speaking 12-16 min

One-to-one with a live examiner

Focus: Spoken interaction, fluency, accuracy, vocabulary and pronunciation across structured tasks.

Delivery and test-day requirements

Take International ESOL at a Test Centre

Sit your test in a calm, supervised Test Centre environment with on-site support. Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled start with valid photo ID and our team will guide you through check-in.

A flexible, secure online option

Take International ESOL from home with live online proctoring. You'll need a valid passport, a quiet space, and a stable internet connection — examiners check in with you in real time.

Scoring and results

LANGUAGECERT International ESOL is marked using a combination of automated and human assessment to provide a fair CEFR-aligned result against clear performance descriptors.

Confirm the required overall score and any skill minimums with your receiving organisation.
